Kapilya

Pronunciation: kah-PEEL-yah

Origin: Tagalog, small chapel used for community worship or intimate ceremonies

A small chapel, used for intimate Filipino Catholic ceremonies including weddings of smaller scale.

A kapilya is a small chapel, typically community-built, used for daily Mass and intimate ceremonies. Many Filipino barangays have kapilyas alongside larger parish churches.

For weddings, a kapilya suits couples who want a small, quiet ceremony. Capacity is usually under 100 guests. Many kapilyas are tied to a parish; the ceremony is conducted by a parish priest who travels to the kapilya.

Kapilya weddings often have a more personal, less ornate feeling than parish weddings. The trade-off is logistics: smaller spaces mean tighter florals, simpler processions, and limited parking.
