Kasal
Pronunciation: kah-SAHL
Origin: Tagalog, the Filipino word for wedding
The Filipino word for wedding, used across Tagalog, Cebuano (with kasal), and many other Philippine languages.
Kasal is the Tagalog word for wedding. It is used across most Philippine languages, sometimes with regional variants (e.g., Cebuano shares kasal; Hiligaynon uses kasal or kasalanon).
The word covers the whole event: ceremony, reception, and the social act of being married. Filipino Catholic, Christian, civil, and interfaith weddings are all kasal.
Filoino-Muslim communities often use Nikah for the marriage contract specifically; the broader celebration may still be called kasal in Filipino-language contexts.
