Khutba

Pronunciation: KHOOT-bah

Origin: Arabic, sermon delivered at the Nikah by the imam

A short sermon the imam delivers during the Nikah, often quoting scripture and counseling the couple.

Khutba is the sermon delivered by the imam at the Nikah. It typically opens the ceremony, frames the marriage in Islamic teaching, and offers counsel to the couple.

Length and content vary by imam and community. Some khutbas are brief and reflective; others are longer with extended scriptural reference.

Families usually do not script the khutba themselves; the imam leads. If you have specific themes you want addressed, raise them with your imam ahead of the ceremony.
