Sherwani

Pronunciation: sher-WAH-nee

Origin: Urdu and Persian, formal long coat worn by South Asian grooms

A long, knee-length formal coat worn by grooms in South Asian weddings, often paired with churidar pants.

A sherwani is a long formal coat that ends at or below the knees. South Asian grooms wear it for weddings, often with embroidery, beadwork, or zardozi detail.

In the Philippines, sherwanis appear in interfaith weddings or where the groom has South Asian family heritage. They are not Filipino attire and should not be styled as a substitute for the barong Tagalog.

For a true sherwani look, source from a tailor or designer with South Asian construction experience. The cut and fabric weight matter.
