Abaniko

Pronunciation: ah-bah-NEE-koh

Origin: Filipino folding fan, often paired with terno or formal Filipiniana ensembles

A Filipino folding fan made of bamboo, lace, or fabric, accessory to the terno or formal Filipiniana.

The abaniko is a Filipino folding fan, often crafted from bamboo with lace or piña fabric. It is a longstanding accessory to the terno and other formal Filipiniana ensembles.

Brides occasionally hold an abaniko in lieu of (or alongside) a bouquet for traditional and heritage-themed weddings. Mothers and ninangs may also carry one as a paired styling choice with the bride's look.

Variants include the abaniko de calado (with cutwork) and the painted-fabric abaniko. Specialty makers in Pampanga and Marikina produce custom heirloom-quality pieces.
