Barong Tagalog
Pronunciation: BAH-rong tah-GAH-log
Origin: Filipino formal shirt with embroidered front, worn by men for weddings and formal occasions
A Filipino formal embroidered shirt worn untucked over an undershirt, the menswear standard for weddings.
The barong Tagalog is the formal shirt that defines Filipino men's wedding attire. It is sheer, embroidered at the front, and worn untucked over a plain undershirt (camisa de chino).
Fabrics range from cotton blends for less formal wear to piña, jusi, or piña-jusi blends for weddings. Embroidery (calado, callado, sombrado) varies in density and price.
The barong is worn by the groom, ninongs, fathers, and often the entire male entourage. It is also acceptable for wedding guests; coordinated palettes are common.
