Badju lapi

Pronunciation: BAH-joo LAH-pee

Origin: Tausug formal jacket, worn over a fitted blouse and paired with sablay or sawal

A Tausug formal jacket, embroidered and beaded, worn by brides and women on ceremonial occasions.

The badju lapi is a Tausug formal jacket, traditionally heavily embroidered and beaded. Brides wear it over a fitted blouse, paired with a long skirt (sablay) or trousers (sawal).

In Tausug weddings, the badju lapi forms part of the bridal ensemble alongside an elaborate headpiece and ornate jewelry. The embroidery and color palette varies by family and community.

The badju lapi is Tausug attire specifically; it should not be conflated with Maranao, Maguindanao, Sama, or Yakan formalwear, each of which has its own distinct garments and cultural meanings.
