Pelaminan
Pronunciation: peh-LAH-mee-nan
Origin: Malay and Bangsamoro wedding stage or dais where the couple is seated and honored during the celebration
The ornate stage where the bride and groom sit during the wedding feast, central to Maranao and Bangsamoro celebrations.
The pelaminan is the elevated, ornately decorated stage where the bride and groom sit during the wedding celebration, particularly the Walima. The decor often includes intricate woodwork, carved arches, fabric drapery, and floral arrangements.
Maranao pelaminan often feature okir-style carving (a Maranao decorative motif tradition); the form, scale, and embellishment varies by community and family. Other Bangsamoro communities (Maguindanao, Tausug, Sama, Yakan) have their own variations on the wedding-stage tradition.
The pelaminan is the visual center of the celebration. Designing one for a Filipino-Muslim wedding involves both aesthetic choice and cultural framing; work with vendors who have experience in Bangsamoro wedding production.
