Kanduli

Pronunciation: kan-DOO-lee

Origin: Maranao and Maguindanao communal feast, hosted at weddings, religious milestones, and life events

A communal feast hosted at Maranao and Maguindanao life events, including weddings.

A kanduli is a communal feast in Maranao and Maguindanao tradition, hosted to mark life events: weddings, religious milestones, the completion of a Hajj, or the building of a home.

In weddings, the kanduli is the abundance-and-hospitality dimension of the celebration: extended family and community share food prepared specifically for the occasion. It overlaps with but is distinct from the Arabic-rooted Walima.

Kanduli food traditions vary by community. Halal cuisine is the baseline; specific dishes (rendang, pater, biryani) reflect Maranao or Maguindanao heritage and may include cross-cultural influences from neighboring traditions.
