Mantilla
Pronunciation: mahn-TEE-yah
Origin: Spanish, lace veil worn over the head and shoulders, adopted in Filipino Catholic and devotional contexts
A long lace veil worn over the head and shoulders, used in Filipino Catholic devotional and wedding settings.
A mantilla is a lace veil with Spanish origins, worn over the head and shoulders. In the Philippines, it appears in Catholic devotional contexts and at some weddings, especially traditional or heritage-themed ones.
Mantillas are typically chantilly or alencon lace, in white, ivory, or black. Bridal mantillas are often the longer, two-meter style; shorter mantillas are used for everyday Mass attendance.
Unlike a Western tulle veil, a mantilla rests on the head without a comb in some draping styles. Pinning it well is a real skill; consider a hairstylist who has worked with one before.
