Piña

Pronunciation: PEEN-yah

Origin: Pineapple-leaf fiber fabric, hand-loomed in Aklan and the Visayas, central to formal Filipino attire

A handwoven pineapple-leaf fabric, sheer and lustrous, used for the finest barong Tagalog and terno gowns.

Piña is a fabric handwoven from pineapple-leaf fiber, traditionally produced in Aklan and other parts of the Visayas. It is sheer, lustrous, and labor-intensive to make.

For weddings, piña is the premium fabric for barong Tagalog, terno gowns, and pañuelo. A full barong made of pure piña can take weavers weeks to produce; price reflects the labor.

Piña is sometimes blended with silk fibers (piña-jusi or piña-seda) for stability and softer drape. Pure piña is the gold standard for heritage weddings; the blend is more practical for everyday formal wear.
